      <image:caption>Our mission is to deliver clean water solutions to the greatest number of people in need, at the lowest cost per person, by developing sustainable and scalable infrastructure projects. Providing access to clean water helps ensure a pathway to mitigating mortality and morbidity while alleviating malnutrition, gender inequality, and disparities in economic opportunity. By THINKING BIGGER, we resolve to lead the effort to end the global water crisis.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Overview - THE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS</image:title>
      <image:caption>663 million people, about 9% of the global population, lack access to improved drinking water sources. More children die everyday from a lack of clean water and sanitation than from malaria, HIV/AIDS, and measles combined. Access to potable water and sanitation is a fundamental human right, and essential to a healthy environment and suitable quality of life. Further, it is beneficial to global economic growth; every $1 spent on water and sanitation is estimated to yield a $4 economic return.</image:caption>

      <image:title>What Makes Us Different - Our Solution</image:title>
      <image:caption>We collaborate with strategic partners to raise equity financing for Public-Private-Partnerships (PPPs) that deliver water infrastructure solutions throughout the world. We will also work closely with development finance institutions and export credit agencies to secure debt at attractive rates in order to leverage the impact of the investments we make. Under the PPP structure, we will have concessions to manage the water treatment facilities for approximately 20 years which will allow us to ensure appropriate service and maintenance, while also creating jobs and building skills for people locally. Those served will pay a price they can afford, which will then be utilized to repay the debt raised as well as recover some of the initial equity of the PPP. More importantly, they will have a vested interest in the long-term viability of these projects via the human and economic impact they will have on their communities. Project costs will vary, but our goal is to provide access to clean drinking water at an average contribution of $1 per person per year.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Approximately 663 million people, about 9% of the global population, lack access to improved drinking water sources; 48% of those people live in sub-Saharan Africa.3 In fact, in 21 countries, more than one third of the people do not have access to clean drinking water; 16 of those countries are in sub-Saharan Africa.4 More than two thirds of people without access to potable water live on less than $2 a day.5 In low- and middle-income countries, 38% of health care facilities lack any water source.6 The water crisis is the #1 global risk based on impact to society as a measure of devastation and the #8 global risk based on likelihood of occurring within 10 years.7</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Crisis - Women and Children</image:title>
      <image:caption>Women and children disproportionately suffer the negative consequences from the lack of access to clean water. In Africa and Asia, young women and children walk an average of 3.7 miles a day just to collect water,8 which amounts to an average of 200 million hours every day collecting water.9 72% of households rely on women to fetch and haul the family’s water when there is no water source in the home.10 The ripple effect associated with this process includes missed school days and increased personal risk of danger. More children die every day from a lack of clean water and sanitation than from malaria, HIV/AIDS, and measles combined.11 Water-related diseases are a leading cause of death for children under the age of five, killing nearly 1,000 children per day.12</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Crisis - Global Economic Loss</image:title>
      <image:caption>In addition to the human cost, the World Bank estimates that lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation results in a global economic loss of US$260 billion annually.13 In fact, Sub-Saharan Africa loses an estimated 4.3% of its GDP each year due to lack of adequate water supply and sanitation.14 On the other hand, every $1 spent on water and sanitation is estimated to yield a $4 economic return.15 The opportunity cost of collecting water translates into $24 billion of lost economic benefits per year.16 Furthermore, of the 159 million people relying on water taken directly from rivers, lakes and other surface waters, seven out of ten live in sub-Saharan Africa, eight times more than any other region.17</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Crux - The Biggest Need is Not Being Met</image:title>
      <image:caption>Most water initiatives remain focused on providing relief to one village at a time, rather than large-scale infrastructure projects that reach the most people in the most cost-effective and sustainable manner. In sub-Saharan Africa, in particular, emphasis has been on wells and springs as improved water sources, rather than piped water on premises. Despite the meaningful need, rural areas particularly lack access to piped water. It is estimated that 79% of the people using unimproved sources and 93% of people using surface water live in rural areas.1 One in three people in rural areas do not have access to piped drinking water on premises.2 Approximately 30-40% of rural water systems in developing countries, particularly handpumps, are non-functional or work at sub-optimal levels.3 Even urban regions in sub-Saharan Africa have seen a decline in piped water on premises as a percentage of the population.4</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e5d68e1d9ed6977bbe5b50f/1584914566289-1N04YUPLFZTZTRC1KEQ9/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>The Crux - Insufficient Funding</image:title>
      <image:caption>The major constraint in the fight to alleviate the water crisis is funding. For most developing countries, access to traditional sources of external financing (Official Development Assistance grants and concessional sovereign loans) are grossly inadequate to fund water and sanitation projects. In addition, local authorities tend to have capacity constraints including weak business development skills needed to access financing. Moreover, the revenues generated by water and sanitation projects are generally unable to meet the capital, operational and maintenance costs of a project, making it difficult to provide water at a tariff that the end-user can afford. Innovative financing structures such as Public-Private-Partnerships (PPPs) have been initiated over the past few decades with limited success due to poor returns on investment for private capital.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e5d68e1d9ed6977bbe5b50f/1584914637617-OH5YGR7UE8K1NEEQZX8Q/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>The Crux - Limited Vested Interest</image:title>
      <image:caption>Governments and parastatals are often passive observers of water projects in their regions, leading to a limited interest in the success of these facilities. Water system maintenance is often overlooked following completion of installation and has not been planned nor financially accounted for. A study by WaterAid in Tanzania indicates that only two years after installation, 25% of systems are non-functional.5 The construction and management of water treatment facilities must create jobs and build skills within those communities. Those served should pay a price they can afford to confirm their status as stakeholders and their participation in the outcome of the project. It is paramount that governments and end-users are “invested” in the success of their water systems in order to ensure appropriate and sustainable service and maintenance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>A Crise - MULHERES E CRIANÇAS</image:title>

      <image:title>A Crise - PERDA ECONÓMICA GLOBAL</image:title>
      <image:caption>Além do custo humano, o Banco Mundial estima que a falta de acesso à água potável e saneamento resulta em uma perda económica global de $260 bilhões dólares anuais.13 A África Subsariana perde cerca de 4,3% do seu PIB por falta de abastecimento de água e saneamento adequado.14 Por outro lado, estima-se que cada dólar gasto em água e saneamento produza um retorno económico de 4$.15 O custo de oportunidade da colecta de água traduz’se em 24 biliões de dólares em benefícios económicos perdidos por ano.16 Além disso, das 159 milhões de pessoas que dependem da água retirada directamente de rios, lagos e outras águas superficiais, 7 em cada 10 vivem na África Subsariana, oito vezes mais do que qualquer outra região.17</image:caption>

      <image:title>O Ponto Crucial - A MAIOR NECESSIDADE NÃO ESTÁ A SER ATENDIDA</image:title>
      <image:caption>A maioria das iniciativas relacionadas com o fornecimento de água permanecem focadas em fornecer assistência uma vila de cada vez, em vez de projectos de infraestrutura de larga escala que atingem a maioria das pessoas, da maneira mais económica e sustentável. Na África Subsariana, em particular, a ênfase tem sido nos poços e fontes de água melhoradas, em vez de água encanada nas instalações. Apesar da necessidade significativa, as áreas rurais não têm acesso à água potável. Estima-se que 79% das pessoas usam fontes não melhoradas e 93% das pessoas que usam água de superfície vivem em áreas rurais.1 1 em cada 3 pessoas nas áreas rurais não tem acesso a água potável nas suas instalações.2 Aproximadamente 30-40% dos sistemas de água rurais nos países em desenvolvimento, particularmente as bombas manuais, não são funcionais ou trabalham em níveis abaixo do ideal.3 Mesmo as áreas urbanas das regiões da África Subsariana viram um declínio na água potável nas suas instalações como uma percentagem da população..4</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e5d68e1d9ed6977bbe5b50f/1584914566289-1N04YUPLFZTZTRC1KEQ9/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>O Ponto Crucial - FINANCIAMENTO INSUFICIENTE</image:title>
      <image:caption>A principal restrição na luta para aliviar a crise da água é o financiamento. Para a maioria dos países em desenvolvimento, o acesso às fontes tradicionais de financiamento externo (subsídios da Assistência Oficial ao Desenvolvimento e empréstimos soberanos concessionais) é extremamente inadequado para financiar projectos de água e saneamento. As autoridades locais tendem a ter restrições de capacidade e de desenvolvimento de negócios necessárias para acessar o financiamento. Além disso, as receitas geradas pelos projectos de água e saneamento geralmente são incapazes de cobrir os custos de capital operacionais e de manutenção de um projecto, dificultando o fornecimento de água a uma tarifa que o usuário final possa pagar. Estruturas de financiamento inovadoras, como Parcerias Público-Privadas (PPPs), foram iniciadas nas últimas décadas com sucesso limitado devido aos baixos retornos do investimento em capital privado.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e5d68e1d9ed6977bbe5b50f/1584914637617-OH5YGR7UE8K1NEEQZX8Q/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>O Ponto Crucial - JUROS ADQUIRIDOS LIMITADOS</image:title>
      <image:caption>Governos e entidades estatais são frequentemente observadores passivos de projectos de água em suas regiões, levando a um interesse limitado no sucesso dessas instalações. A manutenção do sistema de água é frequentemente ignorada após a conclusão da instalação e não é planeada nem contabilizada financeiramente. Um estudo da WaterAid na Tanzânia indica que em apenas dois anos após a instalação, 25% dos sistemas deixam de ser funcionais.5 A construção e a gestão de instalações de tratamento de água devem criar empregos e desenvolver habilidades nessas comunidades. Os consumidores devem pagar um valor acessível para confirmar sua condição como parte interessada e a sua participação no resultado do projecto. É fundamental que os governos e usuários finais sejam “investidos” no sucesso dos seus sistemas de água, a fim de garantir serviços e manutenção adequados e sustentáveis.</image:caption>
